The EU (European Union) is going to regulate artificial intelligence. Companies fear that bureaucracy may stifle innovation
Since 2018, the European Union has been discussing regulatory frameworks regarding Artificial Intelligence, and now, towards the end of 2023, it seems that more robust legislation has gained momentum and will be implemented, known as the AI Act.
According to the Brazil Journal article, some European companies are concerned about legislation that will restrict the use of facial recognition tools, for example, and also consumer behavior software. Like any initiative aimed at implementing rules, this one has not been well-received by some companies. The article does not specify which companies these are, but they are likely those that prefer a more "free" territory to develop their tools without being accountable to anyone, including their consumers.
The truth is that they will have to adapt and play within the boundaries, under the threat of sanctions (at least they are applied in Europe). The EU promises to impose a fine of 7% of annual revenue in case of rule violations.
Much has been said about the increasing use of artificial intelligence by companies, whether for productivity gains or creating new ways to interact with customers. The fact is that rules are needed for the use of this type of technology. In my view, it cannot be unrestricted use at any cost or in any way, like a "no man's land."
For this reason, I view the EU's decision to regulate the use with approval. Rules are important to establish the limits of what can or cannot be done and will certainly help in the more appropriate use of such tools, as well as laying the groundwork for their future development.
Finally, as I am not an expert on the subject, I am curious to know if our country is working on something similar. It would be very positive, although our legislators, in general, tend to produce rules that are either unenforceable or, worse, impossible to control and sanction.
What do you think about a similar implementation in Brazil?
